2004 USATF Indiana Association 10 km Road Race Walk Championships Sunday, October 31, 2004

The 10km championships were held on Halloween morning at Franklin Township Middle School. We had clear blue skies with a light breeze from the SSW and a starting temperature of around 50 degrees. David Moebs assisted Ian Seecof with the course set-up before toeing the starting line. Thomas Keller, Max Walker and Damon Clements also assisted with the set-up. Pat Walker had to supervise the volunteers from the sidelines while slowly moving on her crutches.

Nine competitors started, including Olympian, Curt Clausen. He was in Indianapolis on Saturday for a meeting at the USATF National Office and decided to participate in our race. Cheryl Sunman, Chief Judge, instructed the walkers while sporting an official jester’s hat in the holiday spirit. Dave Bannon was back as our starter and timer.

It was a fast start with Curt finishing the first kilometer in 4:48. Curt eventually lapped all the other walkers, just barely catching Max Walker, before finishing the last lap in 4:38. Bob Stewart made sure the walkers were supplied with water during the race. Jim Flack, Jack Bates and Bill Freeman kept track of the walker’s splits during the race.

Ed Fitch from Ohio was in Indiana for a Contra Dance convention and managed to fit in the 10 km between dance sessions. Theresa Amerman and Cathy Mayfield were close throughout the race with Theresa beating Cathy at the finish line.

Judges Mike Bird, Sarah Coil, Judy Freeman, Tish Roberts and Pat Walker kept a close eye on the walker’s legality during the race. Terry Snoeberger, recorder, was assisted by Beth Alexander and Dave Harriman at the DQ Board. Greg Gember videotaped the race.
